Does Anger help Tiger Woods Play Better?
In a recent article by Matthew Futterman, he askes the question of whether Tiger can change his temperament and still play great golf.
Quote: “When he tees off Thursday afternoon at the Masters, Tiger Woods will be conducting an experiment that may help answer one of the few unexplored questions in sports: Can one of the world’s greatest athletes change his temperament and still win?…
…When he has hit a shot he doesn’t like, he has tossed the club or slammed it against the turf. He has screamed expletives and ignored 8-year-old autograph seekers. He has glared at any photographer who has dared to click a shot during his backswing or any fan who has disrupted his rhythm…”
Personally from what I have seen of Tiger on TV, he doesn’t let the anger bother him and instead chooses to focus more on the job at hand. There had been plenty of rounds in which Tiger had cracked it and yet pulled off a fantastic score.
So my question is, can anger do good in your golf game?
Of course it can, but it depends on what the anger means to you. If it means you’ve ruined your round of golf, then no, it won’t help you at all. In fact it will make you more angry and frustrated and hate the game even more.
I’ve seen plenty of golfers spit the dummy on the course and therefore proceeded to have disastrous holes right after.
However I’ve also seen the golfers who have seemingly easily bounced back and recovered very well. They seemed to have the amazing ability to use and channel the anger on the golf course into focus for the next shot.
Anger is just a tool. It’s volatile fuel, which means for the wrong purposes, it will burn you but with the right channeling, it will propel you to a higher level.
What do you think about this? Do you think anger will get you anywhere on the golf course?
